Digital Art Size Guide: Understanding Aspect Ratios and Framing

When browsing through a digital download shop, you will often notice that a single piece of artwork comes with multiple files in different numbers and ratios (like 2:3, 3:4, or ISO A4). If you are new to the world of digital printables, this can look incredibly confusing. What do these numbers mean, and how do you know which file fits your favorite IKEA frame?

In this guide, we will simplify aspect ratios and framing, ensuring you always select the perfect file size without accidentally cropping out important details of your beautiful artwork.

What is an Aspect Ratio?

An aspect ratio is simply the relationship between the width and the height of an image. Think of it as the shape of the canvas. For example, a square image has a 1:1 ratio. A rectangular print could be a 2:3 ratio or a 4:5 ratio. A single digital artwork file can be scaled up or down as long as it stays within the same ratio family.

The Most Common Ratio Families for Frames

Here is a breakdown of the standard ratio files you will find in our printable gallery and the exact frame sizes they fit:

2:3 Ratio: This is a classic rectangle shape. A 2:3 ratio file can be printed cleanly as 4×6 inches, 8×12 inches, 12×18 inches, 16×24 inches, or 24×36 inches.
3:4 Ratio: A slightly wider rectangle. This file fits standard frame sizes like 6×8 inches, 9×12 inches, 12×16 inches, and 18×24 inches.
4:5 Ratio: Perfect for standard gallery frames. It covers sizes like 4×5 inches, 8×10 inches, 12×15 inches, and 16×20 inches.
ISO International Paper Size (A-Series): This is the standard format used across Europe and Australia. It includes sizes like A5, A4, A3, A2, and A1. If you bought a standard frame abroad, this is usually the file you need.

Pro Tip: Check Your Frame First

Before choosing a file to print, look at the back of the picture frame you plan to use. It will always list the exact measurements (either in inches or centimeters). Once you have the size, match it to one of our ratio families listed above, print that specific file, and your artwork will slide into the frame perfectly with no cutting or white gaps!
